When a homeowner accidentally triggers the smoke detector by burning dinner, it’s just a mere inconvenience to air out the kitchen to restore peace and quiet.
When an alarm falsely sounds in a surgical center, however, the implications are far more serious.
That’s why System Sensor developed the new Advanced Multi-Criteria Fire Detector. Although basic photoelectric or heat detectors are suitable for more routine applications, System Sensor understands that mission-critical environments require a far more sophisticated detector with a much higher level of accuracy.
In addition to surgical and critical care facilities, applications that require the highest level of detection possible include high-security buildings, research and development laboratories, financial centers and brokerage houses with real-time trading.
“Those types of spaces, if they have to evacuate or put emergency response procedures into place because of a nuisance concern, they start counting the dollars in millions very quickly,” explained Todd Alford, product manager for this new detector. “They want the most accurate fire detection possible for those situations. In many cases, the dollars and time they’ve lost can never be recovered.”
To prevent costly and disruptive nuisance alarms from occurring in the first place, System Sensor developed its new Advanced Multi-Criteria Fire Detector with a number of key features. The most fundamental difference between this technology and typical detectors is that it incorporates four sensing devices in one low-profile product.
The sensor’s four elements — photoelectric, thermal, carbon monoxide (CO) and infrared — work together to intelligently analyze the environment and decide whether the sensors are detecting a true fire condition or a nuisance condition. The Advanced Multi-Criteria Fire Detector samples the environment every five seconds with each of these four elements and will only sound the alarm when at least two of the four elements positively confirm a fire.
Having these sensing elements working in tandem is what sets the detector apart from any other technology available on the market. The confirmation and intelligent assessment capabilities will also prove to be ideal for places that are prone to nuisance alarms. Such sites include theaters and other entertainment venues that use special effect smoke.
“It allows us to provide the most accurate fire detection possible while providing superior nuisance rejection for those problem sites,” said Alford. “Different fires have different characteristics, and each fire is a little bit different. By combining four elements, we can successfully filter out nuisance concerns and provide accurate fire detection.”
"This month, General Electric's (GE) health-care division will begin marketing a first-of-its-kind electrocardiograph machine in the U.S. Although packed with the latest technology, the battery-powered device weighs just six pounds, half as much as the smallest ECG machine currently for sale. It will retail for a mere $2,500, an 80% markdown from products with similar capabilities. But what really distinguishes the MAC 800 is its lineage. The machine is basically the same field model that GE Healthcare developed for doctors in India and China in 2008.
The process turns conventional product development on its head. Over the years, multinationals have prospered by turning out premium-priced products for the world's affluent. Rather than also designing products for poorer people elsewhere, many businesses found they could simply pass yesteryear's models down, as if they were unloading fleets of used cars. Lately, big companies such as Microsoft, Nokia, and Procter & Gamble are discovering that they can profit by targeting the world's masses first. And they can score again by selling these low-priced products elsewhere."

OSx86 What or who is more often called a Hackintosh? How these terms can arise?
OSx86 – from word of OS X and x86 – is a collaborative hacking project to run a computer operating system Mac OS X on non-Apple PCs that have processors with x86 architecture.
Stretching Hackintosh begun in June 2005, at WDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) Apple announced the use of an Intel, PowerPC replace that become the brain of the computer they were made.
In January 2006, Apple released Mac OS X 10.4.4 on the iMac and the MacBook Pro. Both are first-generation Apple machines using Intel processors.
Exactly a month later, on February 14, 2006, a Mac OS X v10.4.4 with an additional term appears Hack and displayed on the Internet by a programmer named Jonathan Black.
As if a race between Apple and the Hackintosher. Every time Apple released an update, within two weeks of release also patchnya versions on the internet.
Until the time Leopard was released, more people or teams of developers OSx86 installer DVD release (distro). Various distributions with a password. Call it Kalyway, iATKOS, Leo4All, Zephroth, iDeneb, XXX, IPC and Jas. This installer allows more people to install Hackintosh.
The development was fading distributions when Snow Leopard is released. Distributions abandoned when the emergence of alternative install using the retail DVD of the original release of Apple by using a bootable CD called Boot-123.
Until now, Hackintash still in gray area. Apple Software License parties not to allow OS X installed on your computer outside of Apple products. But today more and more rapid development of Hackintosh. Just look at the forums and dimilis. Number of members increasingly booming. Not only that, posting about updates even faster

LUMIX DMC-L1 Breaks New Ground: Panasonic's First Digital SLR Camera with Interchangeable Lens
Panasonic is pleased to announce the development of our first interchangeable-lens digital SLR camera, the LUMIX DMC-L1. State-of-the-art digital and optical technologies developed for our compact digital cameras have been crystallized to make LUMIX a top camera brand while helping establish a new photographic culture for the digital age. Panasonic is drawing on these leading technologies, and the emotional excitement of true-to-life photographic images, as we announced in our entry to the digital SLR market in 2005.
The DMC-L1 being introduced today is an entirely new kind of digital SLR camera. It is operated much like a traditional film camera but provides a variety of innovative features that increase the fun of shooting photos. While the DMC-L1 is digital, it has a classic design that will remind users of traditional analogue cameras. These characteristics, together with a shutter speed control dial on the camera body and an aperture ring on the LEICA D VARIO-ELMARIT 14-50mm/F2.8-3.5 lens (also being introduced), distinguish the DMC-L1 from conventional digital SLRs in both design and operation.
Because it is digital, the DMC-L1 can offer features such as a full-time Live View function through the large 2.5“ high-resolution LCD, which offers a shooting style different from conventional digital SLRs that have only an optical viewfinder. The full-time Live View is made possible by the new Live MOS sensor, developed using Panasonic's original Maicovicon™ technology. Used in the DMC-L1, the 4/3-type Live MOS sensor with 7.5 million pixels provides both the outstanding image quality of a CCD and the low energy consumption for which CMOS sensors are known. The DMC-L1 also incorporates the Venus Engine III image processing LSI, which teams up with the Live MOS sensor to achieve stunning picture quality and responsive performance, with features such as rapid consecutive shooting.
The DMC-L1 further incorporates a Supersonic Wave Filter that serves as a dust reduction system, so you don't have to worry about dust entering the camera during lens changes.
The LUMIX DMC-L1 debuts as a state-of-the-art digital SLR camera that maintains the intuitive control and operability of familiar analogue cameras, unlike digital SLRs that simply offer extended functions and specifications. The DMC-L1 is a finely crafted, truly satisfying camera that makes it easy for people who have never even used a digital single lens reflex camera to take beautiful shots and gives professionals a powerful tool for creating photographic masterpieces that visually express the emotions of their subjects.
A shutter speed dial on the camera body and an aperture ring on the lens barrel
To enhance the sense of camera control, the DMC-L1 features a shutter speed dial on top of the camera body. The LEICA D VARIO-ELMARIT 14-50mm/F2.8-3.5 lens (also being introduced today) is equipped with an aperture ring, in addition to a focus ring and zoom ring, for easy, direct aperture setting.
Full-time Live View for a whole new style of digital SLR shooting
By combining the full-time image output function of the Live MOS sensor and a mirror-up mechanism, the DMC-L1 achieves a full-time Live View function that displays the image on the LCD directly from the sensor signal. This function can be selected in both Auto Focus and Manual Focus modes. In Manual Focus, it allows the user to enlarge an image within the frame and then select the area focusing. This makes it easy to check the focusing condition on the large 2.5-inch, high-resolution, 207,000-pixel LCD. The depth of field can also be easily checked by pressing the Aperture button.
High-image-quality, low-energy-consuming 4/3-type Live MOS sensor with 7.5 million pixels
The Live MOS sensor used in the DMC-L1 not only makes full-time Live View possible, it also helps capture the beautiful images of a CCD sensor with delicate gradation and a wide dynamic range. And it suppresses energy consumption as only a CMOS sensor can do. Noise is also minimized thanks to a special processing technology that runs on voltage as low as 5 V.
Venus Engine Ill LSI: High image quality, quick response, low energy consumption
The Venus Engine III is an image processing LSI that was newly developed to maximize the performance of the Live MOS sensor. While inheriting the earlier Venus Engine’s high resolution, superior color reproduction and detailed gradation, the Venus Engine III also reduces noise to the level expected from a digital SLR camera, to help render smooth images. The Venus Engine III improves camera responsiveness too, supporting high-performance consecutive shooting and a short shutter interval. Despite the considerably higher performance, the Venus Engine III consumes only 80% as much power as the Venus Engine II. This combines with the Live MOS sensor’s low energy consumption to provide longer battery life.
Dust reduction system to prevent annoying contaminants
The most critical and annoying problem with digital SLRs with interchangeable lenses is the possibility of dust getting inside the camera during lens changes, contaminating the image sensor. If this happens, professional cleaning is often required. The DMC-L1 takes care of this problem by incorporating a Supersonic Wave Filter dust reduction system. The system uses supersonic vibration to instantly shake off any dust that might otherwise affect the image.
Panasonic original home networking
Like all LUMIX models, the DMC-L1 is compatible with the SD Memory Card. It also is compatible with the mass-storage SD standard based on FAT32, including the upcoming super-high-capacity SD Memory Cards of more than 2 GB (SDHC). Panasonic invites you to explore new ways to enjoy photos at home. Take shots with your LUMIX camera, view the images on a Panasonic plasma display, save them onto discs with a DVD recorder, and print them with a photo printer connected to the TV…It's all part of Panasonic's pursuit of a new photographic culture for the digital age.

BIOS reviews the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and writes - 'The most critical and annoying problem with digital SLRs with interchangeable lenses is the possibility of dust getting inside the camera during the lens changes, thus contaminating the image sensor. If this happens, professional cleaning is often required. The DMC-L1 effectively manages this problem by incorporating a Supersonic Wave Filter dust reduction, which uses supersonic vibration to instantly shake off dust that might otherwise affect the image.'
Photoxels reviews the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 Digital SLR and writes - 'If you are thinking of moving up to a digital SLR, or are keen to return to enjoying a dSLR with excellent analogue handling and feel, then be sure to try out the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1. With Live View LCD, optical image stabilization in the lens, built-in bounce flash, built-in dust reduction system, and excellent image quality, you may find that photography is intuitive and fun again.'
Luminous Landscape reviews the Panasonic Lumix DMC L1 and writes - 'I'm of two minds about the Panasonic L1. Part of me really would like to like it. I'm pleased to see Panasonic entering the DSLR marketplace at around the same time as Sony with its A100. Since the camera business has very much become driven by the electronic giants, especially those that OEM sensors the way the both Sony and Panasonic do, having them each marketing a full featured DSLR is no bad thing. In the case of Panasonic what I find very attractive is the partnering with Leica. The Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 that comes bundled with the L1 is almost worth the price of admission by itself, and I wouldn't doubt that there will be Olympus owners who see it that way as well, since there's no telling when or if Panasonic will sell this lens by itself.'
Megapixel reviews the Panasonic DMC-L1 and writes - 'The Panasonic DMC-L1 is a camera designed for the experts, and for those who enjoy the process of photography as much as its results, for they are the ones that most likely will appreciate the analog controls of the L1, and its big stabilized Leica lens. The capabilities of the L1 are impressive, and the controls available to obtain specific results are excellent. All that the camera needs now is a greater range of stabilized Leica lenses.'
CNET writes the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and writes - "Despite my complaints about design, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 can create very nice images under the right conditions. With its kit lens, we saw virtually no colored fringing, and images were very sharp, with accurate, well-saturated, colors (but not overly so) and a decent dynamic range. The automatic white balance produced overly warm images with our lab's tungsten lights, thought the camera's tungsten preset produced much more neutral results. The manual white balance we set provided the most neutral results. Exposures were generally very good when relying on the camera's automatic exposure system. The camera did a decent but not excellent job of balancing fill flash from its built-in flash with light from the lamp in our test scene."
Digital Camera Review has reviewed the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and writes - 'The Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 is an impressive camera that, frankly, is going to have a hard time contending with the competition. Image quality is excellent and the camera operates well. The included “kit? lens is far and away the best kit lens that you can get, with a fast maximum aperture of f/2.8. As far as ergonomics and styling, my opinion is that people are going to be split over whether they’re good or bad. Personally, I enjoyed the styling since it gave a more “mechanical? feel to operating the camera. Pushing levers and turning rings was more fun than just pressing buttons to make a menu choice. Overall, I liked the camera, but the only purchase option is a relatively expensive kit. I’m also not sure that the camera has enough added value to compare against similarly (and cheaper) priced kits, like the Nikon D80 and Canon EOS 30D.'
PopularPhotography has posted a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and writes - 'With its excellent stabilized zoom lens, live preview, and bright-image DOF capability, the L1 offers some significant benefits over most other DSLRs. Is it worth the $1,900 price tag? If you subtract the value of the Leica 14-50mm stabilized lens, you're getting a well-built DSLR with a dual-position pop-up flash, tons of controls, and Extremely High image quality at most ISO speeds for only about $600. Try to beat that!'
Trusted Reviews has a review of the Panasonic DMC-L1 and writes, "Panasonic cameras have always had a reputation for image noise problems, and unfortunately the L1 is no exception. There was visible noise from 400 ISO upwards, and shots at the 1600 ISO maximum were effectively unusable. There were also visible purple fringes on a number of high-contrast shots, again not something I’d expect to see on a camera claiming professional credentials. While the AF system performed well, I did encounter some problems with the exposure metering. ... Although the Panasonic DMC-L1 is an interesting first SLR and the retro styling will no doubt appeal to some, and while its performance and build quality are excellent, the uncomfortable handling, dark viewfinder and fiddly controls are a handicap. It suffers from the usual Panasonic image noise problems, and the optical quality of the Leica-branded lens isn’t all its cracked up to be. There are better DSLRs with better lenses for a lot less money."
DCResource has a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and writes, "Photo quality is very good in JPEG mode, and excellent if you're shooting RAW. In either case, photos were generally well-exposed, with pleasing colors and minimal purple fringing. JPEGs straight out of the camera are on the soft side, so you may want to turn up the in-camera sharpening a notch or two. Photos I took in RAW mode were much sharper and had more saturated colors to boot. Noise levels are low through ISO 400, but at ISO 800 you start to see noise reduction artifacting (in JPEG mode), and it gets even worse at ISO 1600, where I also noticed some color shifting. ... The Lumix DMC-L1 is an intriguing product, and a good first digital SLR for Panasonic. It offers a lot of features, some of which are quite unique, though some of its frustrations (namely noise at high ISOs, so-so image processing, and poor ergonomics) really stick with you. The biggest problem I have with the L1 is its price: no matter how nice the lens is (and it IS nice), $1700 is a steep price to pay for a 7.5 Megapixel camera that's far from perfect."
DCRP has a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and writes, "Photo quality is very good in JPEG mode, and excellent if you're shooting RAW. Shutterbug has a review of the Panasonic DMC-L1 and writes, "I photographed mostly in Large JPEG and occasionally in the Raw mode plus JPEG, and image quality was superb. One of the main bragging rights of this camera are the two (as of this writing) Leica lenses made for it (with click stops) so one would expect that the lens/image processing coordination would be excellent—it is. Indeed, I detected little problem with edges at most f-stops, no fringing and overall got images that were very pleasing to me. ... the DMC-L1 is a DSLR that takes a road less traveled, one with its own unique rewards and challenges. It did not force me to work in another way, but I found that it was most pleasing when working in ways that I had not used in many years."
DPExpert has a review of the Panasonic Lumix L1 and writes, "The Panasonic is a difficult camera to rate because of the price. The Olympus E330, with which it shares components, sells for about $1800 but doesn’t have a comparable lens. The Nikon D200, with a better viewfinder, more pixels but lesser optic sells for $2900. The Lumix L1 is highly recommended because it is a fine camera but whether it is value for money will be for the customer to decide. In the US the price is already dropping."
PhotographyBLOG has a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and writes, "it is hard to know just who the L1 would appeal to beyond the traditionalist who wants his or her DSLR to look like a 'real' camera, or the enthusiast who requires a plethora of dials and switches to twist and tweak and feel like they're exerting more of an influence over the end result than they probably are. The thing is, such traditionalists will probably already own a set of Canon or Nikon lenses that they'd be better off allying to a D80 or 400D, rather than investing in a whole new set of Four Thirds optics. In terms of portability the Panasonic L1 is rather weighty and unwieldy, not to mention prohibitively costly, though that added heft – and to be fair, very nicely constructed build – somewhat cushions the blow. The L1 is certainly a high quality if slightly flawed product that I feel is more a way of Panasonic establishing itself as a premium brand among DSLRs than actually producing something it is going to sell in any great numbers. The fact that it feels not quite there yet is the reason for the rather average score; let's hope that the Panasonic L2 builds on the positive points of this model."
DPReview has a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and writes, "For a first attempt at a digital SLR I think it's fair to say that Panasonic has done a good job, they've managed to squeeze better high ISO performance out of the same sensor than Olympus did with the E-330. Panasonic's noise reduction algorithm tuned to clean up chroma noise but leave as much luminance detail available as possible (the E-330 delivering almost opposite results at ISO 1600). I'd be quite comfortable shooting the DMC-L1 up to ISO 800 and know that while there would be some noise visible at ISO 1600 it would at least have a 'film grain' look rather than the digital chroma noise effect. Color balance was also good with a surprisingly mature, conservative approach which avoids over-saturating images while delivering natural looking images (no Disney blues or reds here). If you want your images a bit punchier (from a color point of view) you can always opt to turn up saturation in the Film Mode menu. The L1 also delivered good reliable automatic white balance performance, something often 'skipped' when considering a camera but something which can make a real (and often difficult to reverse) impact on your snapshot type photos. "
Photography Press has a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and gives it an 8 out of 10 rating: "The Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 is an attractive package but that Leica kit lens makes it an expensive looking one, so the value for money becomes a bit of an issue when you look at competing D-SLRs in that price bracket. The slightly retro handling and the image performance are great bonuses in my book even if the gloomy porro finder is not such a breeze, making focus confirmation quite difficult at times. However, good build and some unique features with cracking image quality combine here to make a great first D-SLR from Panasonic, one well worth closer inspection."
Imaging Resource has a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 and writes, "Its higher quality lens with optical image stabilization and wide aperture are largely responsible for that higher price. Though image quality is actually pretty good, in many cases comparable to a 10 megapixel camera, its high shutter lag in Live View mode is a major strike against the $1,500 camera. Shutter lag more than doubles in this mode, and adding flash extends shutter lag out to more than 3/4 second. There's no question that the lens is good, and its image stabilization is nice for low light shots. The Panasonic L1's reasonable high ISO performance means that you can also hand-hold indoor shots without flash. But the lens and camera combination is quite heavy, making it a bad choice for most consumer photographic applications. Many will look to the L1's Live View mode as its greatest benefit, but unfortunately, it's slow and confusing to use."

The ultrasonic unit attaches to small diamond coated tips which vibrate at 20,000 cycles per second. The small size of the tip allows more visibility of the tooth particularly when the microscope is used. The ultrasonic unit is a tool used by Dr. Robin for locating small canals and gently removing objects from previous therapy including posts and filling materials. In addition, the ultrasonic unit is invaluable to modern endodontic surgery

As regular readers of this blog might have noticed: I love great technology. When I talk about technology, I push the concept slightly further than most web aficionados might do. It is not just gadgets that I like, but any well designed tool that can make my life easier is much appreciated. A great blog to see examples of what I am talking about is Kevin Kelly’s Cool Tools blog.
I have a many pieces of technology that I really like and use often. Some examples: a Leatherman Juice Cs4 multitool, a Brabantia bin ,a Samsung NC-10 netbook running Ubuntu, a Solis Citrus Press, a Victorinox Trevi 17 briefcase or a Microplane Grater). All of these products have one thing in common: they have been extremely carefully designed for the task at hand. Every element has been consciously put in place and considered. This is refreshing in a world of more and more crap. One of my favourite books on the topic of design is Donald Norman’s classic The Design of Everyday Things. He outlines some design principles that many products violate which consequently makes them hard to use. What he does not adMy latest technology acquisition does have this creative inspiration. It is a Strida folding bike. This brilliant piece of engineering will help me get to and from the train station every day. The Strida was featured on Cool tools a little while ago and I completely agree with everything the reviewer writes there.
The bike is very low maintenance. It uses a Kevlar belt instead of a chain, so no grease to get on your clothes. It rides a bit like a sports car drives: the handling is very direct. You sit up straight while riding the bike, giving you a good overview of traffic. As you can see on the Youtube video below, the (un)folding process is incredibly fast:
dress is the creative inspiration that is needed for truly great products. The joy is in the details: little loops allow you to lock the brakes, so that the bike can’t roll away when standing up and the carrier on the back doubles as a stand when lying down. Even the marketing people did a good job (in general I am not fond of marketeers). They know that people will ask you about the bike in wonderment, so they have provided a case of Strida business cards underneath the saddle that you can hand out.

This is the rechargeable Logitech MX Air Mouse that comes packed with features including the Freespace motion control technology that Logitech are so very proud of.
The Logitech Air Mouse combines different technologies including 2.4GHz RF, MEMS sensors with DSP and lasers for both traditional laser mousing and motion-control.
This has been done many times before with products like the Gyration Wireless Products (which I own), but Logitech hopes to better previous devices with their latest technology.
The Air Mouse aims to do things a different way by bridging the gap between mouse and remote control.
Dedicated volume control and pause/play buttons are neatly positioned down the center of the device and you will find a touch-sensitive scroll-panel instead of the standard scroll wheel.
These refinements make the Logitech MX Air Mouse a refreshing change and much better suited to mouse and remote tasks.
It works up to distances of around 30 feet away and should be shipping to Europe and the US sometime in August for $150.

Introducing the BugEye Thermal Pest Camera. The latest technology in termite and pest detection. The BugEye Thermal Camera utilizes a high resolution monitor to display temperature differences down to 0.05C allowing the operator to see both warm and cool areas in wall and ceiling cavities caused by termite infestation. Due to the highly sensitive resolution of the unit, active termite leads in hidden cavities are also visible in ideal conditions. A unique capability of the unit is the optional wireless transmitter module for viewing images on a remote screen or documenting inspections on a notebook PC or VCR.The following images were taken in residential properties and demonstrate the effectiveness of the BugEye Thermal camera in detecting nesting inside wall and ceiling cavities. Note that an active nest will appear brighter than the surrounding wall due to the heat generated by the termites. Inactive nests will generally appear darker due to the cold 'sink' nature of the mud pack.
Note that conditions such as direct sunshine or cold rain on exterior wall surfaces will have a noticeable effect on what the thermal camera can detect on these walls from inside the building. These effects should be taken into account during the inspection process where ever possible and exterior walls should be inspected at times when these situations can be avoided. We conduct inspections should you be considering purchasing a property or would like to know whether your existing home has a termite or borer problem.
Inspections are conducted to Australian Standards AS 4349.3
On average an inspection can take two to three hours to complete.
A comprehensive report is issued on completion.
You should note we can only inspect those areas with reasonable access.
Remember the MonoTracer? Well here’s another vehicle classed within the motorcycle category but an entirely different concept! The Uno, designed by the 18-year old Ben J. Poss Gulak and his team is a self-balancing motorcycle that uses a pair of gyroscopes to constantly keep its rider upright. This means it only needs a set of wheels placed together and not like any motorcycle you’ve seen. It may not look really easy to ride but apparently it’s just controlled by an on/off switch and all you need to do to accelerate is lean forward. If you lean back, it reverses too – there’s something normal motorcycles can’t do!

One look at these photos and you know this motorcycle is in the concept stage as I cannot remember seeing any of these on the road.
This is the SunRed solar-powered motorcycle that won the Best Innovative Technology award at the Barcelona Int’l Auto Show, this does look pretty cool and anything that is good to the environment and can be classed as gadget or latest technology is good in my books.
This SunRed project in the near future will result in a life-size prototype of the solar-powered motorcycle, the prototype will be able to store electrical power from captured sunlight and power the motorcycle in the most environmentally-friendly way.
The clamshell looking motorcycle is built that way to optimize the panel’s surface and to make the vehicle not too bulky. The SunRed solar-powered motorcycle is not moving it can store energy for up to 20km (13 miles) and travel at around 50km/h (30 mph). Most modern electric bikes are designed in the same way as the motor on this solar-powered motorcycle; it is placed right in the axle of the wheel and brushless.
Now we got to remember this vehicle designed by SunRed is just a concept, but the company hopes that this will become a benchmark for future developments of solar applications in different vehicles
In their dedication towards ‘fast switching technology’ Samsung has provided consumers with yet another LCD series, the F71. Available in 40 and 46-inches, Samsung has given the F71 series the latest technology including 1080p HD-readiness to provide the best picture performance around. We switched on the LE40F71B 40-inch model to see what it had to offer.
Design
This glossy black, less-is-more design would work well for any TV. Without too many intrusive logos splattered all over it the frame, the front stays smart without any annoying distractions. Two internal speakers are situated at each end. To provide you with a bit of background info in the hope of getting this TV up your stairs, the dimensions are 1129 x 732 x 106.
Setup/Installation
The swivel stand is easy to connect, and once it’s stood upright the TV looks fab. The auto-programmer is on offer as soon as you plug in the power, so make sure you agree to let it take over as it only takes a few minutes before all the channels are tuned in.
Features
A quick peek at the LE40F71B ‘s spec list soon informed us that it has loads of great technology on offer. Samsung has gone completely over the top in feature generosity, but we’re not ones to whinge. All the important features are there, including 1080p HD, SRS Tru Surround Sound XT, a Digital Natural Image Engine, Game Mode and Picture-in-Picture. Its 178 degree viewing angle also makes sure the best view is provided from almost anywhere in the room. The picture performance is supported by a new type of CCFL backlight, which along with 25.7 billion colours plans to provide the most luscious and realistic pictures. The audio is provided by a pair of 10 watt speakers supporting A2 Nicam Stereo, we would normally expect 30 watts in total, but not on this occasion. An auto-volume leveller will kick in depending on what type of programme you’re watching. Fun and useful features making this TV seem like a complete bargain are Picture-in-picture, sleep timer, 1000 pages of Teletext, auto-power off, and a game mode worth its weight in gold.
Performance
Unfortunately this LCD TV can’t provide the speedy 6 millisecond response time like the Sharp Aquos LC 42XD1E, instead it gave us a slightly slower 8. However, the effect this has on the overall picture performance is nothing the amateur would notice. Vibrant and clear colours really take the whole viewing experience to a whole new level. We loved the game mode, but we did see the occasional motion-slur which was disappointing. HD programmes on Sky were amazing; with some of the best contrasts we have seen on HD TV to date. Volume levels were slightly low, so you can push it to its limits and still stay friends with the neighbours.

LG Display has revealed that it is currently developing the world’s very first TFT roll-printing technology that has the ability to replace the photolithography process. The all-new technology will be demonstrated by its developer at the Society of Information Display (SID) 2008 event.
Photolithography, which is also known as optical lithography, is a process used in microfabrication to selectively remove parts of a thin film or the bulk of a substrate. It includes an intricate set of processes, for which huge and costly equipment is a prerequisite. However, by employing the roll-printing technology rather than photolithography a lot of these issues are dealt with more effectively.
The roll-printing technology is expected to render manifold benefits, such as it would help cut down the material and equipment costs, clean room investment costs and also curtail the production time of TFT-LCD. And the best of all, it is an eco-friendly technology that reduces the use of chemicals used in the photolithography process to a great extent
generation, flexible display technology.Though LG Display ascertains that this new technology would power them in areas of cost and efficiency as compared to other company’s, it does not mention the consumer importance angle, which can only be lower prices of course.
As mentioned before, the innovative TFT roll-printing technology will be showcased by LG Display at the SID 2008, which runs from May 20th through 22nd in Los Angeles, California.
The F 500 Mind showcases the very latest technology
At the Tokyo Motor Show 2003, Mercedes-Benz presented the latest in a string of research vehicles which have attracted much interest and attention over the years and which provide fascinating insights into the automotive technology of tomorrow and beyond. Packaged as a modern four-door fastback saloon, the F 500 Mind mobile research lab showcases more than a dozen ideas for enhancing the safety, drive technology and comfort of future Mercedes passenger cars.
The DaimlerChrysler researchers will be using this vehicle to conduct the first practical tests of these innovative systems and pave the way for their commercialisation. The raft of innovations extends all the way from the night vision system with infrared laser headlamps to two-way doors and a programmable multivision display in the cockpit. Electronic accelerator and brake pedals, an interior pillar which provides structural rigidity and an ultrasound driver information system are further features being tested by Mercedes-Benz in the F 500 Mind.
For the powertrain, the DaimlerChrysler researchers have developed a high-performance diesel hybrid unit whose NEDC fuel consumption is up to 20 per cent lower than that of a comparable CDI engine. The state-of-the-art V8 diesel engine (184 kW/250 hp) from the S-Class has been combined with a powerful electric motor (50 kW) which is switched on and off by an electronic controller in response to traffic conditions and driving style. The electric motor can take over for example when moving off from rest, in stop-go conditions or in other situations where an internal combustion engine does not operate at optimal efficiency. When the driver demands more power, the V8 internal combustion engine cuts in to provide sharp acceleration. The 300 V battery for the electric motor is located under the passenger cell and is recharged during braking.
With a body length of 5092 millimetres and a wheelbase of 2965 mm, the F 500 Mind offers a significant gain in legroom in the rear compared with a conventional present-day saloon in this class. This was made possible by using innovative-design electronic accelerator and brake pedals which take the form of pressure-sensitive surfaces. Sensors in these “pedals” transmit the driver’s commands to the engine and SBCĂ´ brake system by means of electrical impulses. The technology takes up much less room than conventional mechanical pedals, increasing the length of the front footwell by 120 millimetres. The driver’s and front passenger’s seats can therefore be positioned further forward, so providing more space for the rear passengers. The steering, too, is controlled electronically.Intelligent door-opening technology allows the doors to be opened in two different ways: either conventionally (both doors open forwards) or from the centre (centre-opening). In the latter mode, the B-pillar stump moves backwards with the rear door to provide a 1900 mm-wide opening for occupant entry and exit.
In the absence of full-size B-pillars, which would normally provide the all-important structural rigidity and side impact protection, the Stuttgart engineers came up with an innovative interior pillar which provides exemplary rigidity and typical Mercedes standards of occupant safety. The pillar is located in the middle of the vehicle towards the rear, and connects the reinforced floor pan to the roof structure. It also houses the air-conditioning ducts and interior lighting units.
The multivision display in the cockpit of the F 500 Mind forms the centrepiece of an innovative instrumentation and control system which offers the driver more flexible information delivery and at the same time reduces fatigue. The dials and displays in the instrument cluster are programmable and their images can be optically superposed or combined with the aid of a semitransparent mirror. In this way the driver can call up a wide range of information at the push of a button on the steering wheel. The information is always displayed directly in the driver’s field of vision where it can be seen easily and will not distract him. A further display, the central display unit, is situated above the centre console. It is linked to a touchpad whose surface is divided up in exactly the same way as the surface of the central display. By briefly touching it, the driver can control the navigation system, radio, air conditioning, telephone and other systems.
Further switches and keys in the vehicle are equipped with special sensors which can detect the driver’s approaching hand even at a distance of several centimetres. They then immediately call up the relevant function in the central display, for more convenient operation.
An advanced-design voice control system and an ultrasound-based driver information system take convenience even further. The ultrasound technology targets the sound at the driver so that only he or she can hear the information from the navigation system, the traffic news and other sound-based information sources, while the front passenger and rear passengers remain undisturbed.
In the dark or in poor visibility, the innovative night vision system projects its images onto the right-hand display. The night vision system consists of two infrared laser headlights on the front of the vehicle which “illuminate” the road with their invisible light over a range of up to 150 metres. The light reflected back from other vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians to a camera mounted on the front windscreen of the F 500 Mind is projected in black and white onto the multivision display. This allows the driver to spot hazards much earlier than in a vehicle operating on conventional dipped headlamps, which have a range of only about 40 metres. Thus Night Vision offers further opportunities for making night driving safer.
As a mobile research lab, the F 500 Mind is equipped with a special “laboratory bench” which folds out towards the rear. This allows a researcher sitting in the back of the vehicle to monitor and control the vehicle systems during testing on the proving grounds and to carry out measurements. For example the researchers are planning to use this fascinating vehicle for intensive user acceptance-testing of the innovative instrumentation and control system and for further practical testing of the diesel hybrid drive system and the Night Vision system.
