In their dedication towards ‘fast switching technology’ Samsung has provided consumers with yet another LCD series, the F71. Available in 40 and 46-inches, Samsung has given the F71 series the latest technology including 1080p HD-readiness to provide the best picture performance around. We switched on the LE40F71B 40-inch model to see what it had to offer.
Design
This glossy black, less-is-more design would work well for any TV. Without too many intrusive logos splattered all over it the frame, the front stays smart without any annoying distractions. Two internal speakers are situated at each end. To provide you with a bit of background info in the hope of getting this TV up your stairs, the dimensions are 1129 x 732 x 106.
Setup/Installation
The swivel stand is easy to connect, and once it’s stood upright the TV looks fab. The auto-programmer is on offer as soon as you plug in the power, so make sure you agree to let it take over as it only takes a few minutes before all the channels are tuned in.
Features
A quick peek at the LE40F71B ‘s spec list soon informed us that it has loads of great technology on offer. Samsung has gone completely over the top in feature generosity, but we’re not ones to whinge. All the important features are there, including 1080p HD, SRS Tru Surround Sound XT, a Digital Natural Image Engine, Game Mode and Picture-in-Picture. Its 178 degree viewing angle also makes sure the best view is provided from almost anywhere in the room. The picture performance is supported by a new type of CCFL backlight, which along with 25.7 billion colours plans to provide the most luscious and realistic pictures. The audio is provided by a pair of 10 watt speakers supporting A2 Nicam Stereo, we would normally expect 30 watts in total, but not on this occasion. An auto-volume leveller will kick in depending on what type of programme you’re watching. Fun and useful features making this TV seem like a complete bargain are Picture-in-picture, sleep timer, 1000 pages of Teletext, auto-power off, and a game mode worth its weight in gold.
Performance
Unfortunately this LCD TV can’t provide the speedy 6 millisecond response time like the Sharp Aquos LC 42XD1E, instead it gave us a slightly slower 8. However, the effect this has on the overall picture performance is nothing the amateur would notice. Vibrant and clear colours really take the whole viewing experience to a whole new level. We loved the game mode, but we did see the occasional motion-slur which was disappointing. HD programmes on Sky were amazing; with some of the best contrasts we have seen on HD TV to date. Volume levels were slightly low, so you can push it to its limits and still stay friends with the neighbours.
